W.E.B. DuBois
W.E.B. DuBois was the first African American to receive a Ph.D. from Harvard. In 1910, he became the head of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and began to edit The Crisis. Although he fought for the same reasons as Booker T. Washington, which was racial equality, he was in strong opposition against him because of Washington's methods. DuBois is known for his idea of the "Talented Tenth" which is a belief that a formation of a black elite would lead to equality. |
