John C. Calhoun
As a leading Southern politician from South Carolina, John C. Calhoun was the leader of the war hawks. In 1817, he was appointed Secretary of War by James Monroe. He served as Vice President during John Adams presidency and Andrew Jackson's presidency. Calhoun supported nullification of any federal laws that the states deem are unconstitutional and he supported states' rights. In 1828, Calhoun secretly wrote the South Carolina Exposition and Protest, which advocated nullification. |  |
