Booker T. Washington
Born into slavery, Booker T. Washington was one of the few to complete a proper education upon being freed. At the age of only twenty five, he established the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama, an all black vocational school. Washington advocated the idea of "self help" which shows his belief that the only possible way to reach equality was to cooperate with the supportive whites and gain respect by proving they are worthy of it. Despite his accomplishments, Washington was criticized by the people in his community because of the methods he used to achieve equality. His strongest critic was W.E.B. DuBois. |
