Roger Williams
Roger Williams is known as being the founder of Rhode Island where most people such as Anne Hutchinson fled to for religious freedom. Williams himself was banned from the Massachusetts Bay colony due to his different beliefs. He argued for the separation of church and state and claimed that taking land from the Native Americans without a proper payment was unjust. After being banned from Massachusetts, Williams bought land from the Narragansett Indians in 1636, where he established Rhode Island, a place for complete religous freedom. |
