George Washington
George Washington is most notably known as being the first President of the United States of America. Being one of the Founding Fathers, he was also veteran of the French and Indian War (known as the Seven Years War in Europe) and participated in the First and Second Continental Congress. He was head commander of the Continental Army during the American Revolution and after the failure of the Articles of Confederation, was elected leader of the Constitutional Convention in 1787. The new constitution required a leader. Washington--after reluctantly agreeing to be a nominee--was unanimoulsy elected as the first president. During his presidency, Washington set most of the precedents for the following presidents. In Washington's Farewell Address, he said that everything needed to be done for the good of the nation. |
