Harry S. Truman
Harry S. Truman became the 33rd President of the United States after Franklin D. Roosevelt's death only a couple of months into his fourth term. He was FDR's third Vice President. At first, Truman followed his predecessor's policies, but as time went on, he created his own. He created a twenty one point program known as the Fair Deal. In 1947, when Britain asked for American aid in Greece, Truman asked Congress for $400 million for Turkey and Greece, which was a little too much for Congress to cooperate with and so Truman made a speech known as Truman's Doctrine to gain American sympathy for Greece and |
Turkey. In 1948, when Russia blocked off the western section of Berlin, Truman ordered supplies to be dropped to the Berliners until the Russians backed down. In 1949, the North Altantic Treaty Organization (NATO) was established to protect western nations. Truman's presidency lasted from the end of WWII, into the Cold War, and to the Korean War.
