Henry Clay
Henry Clay of Kentucky, is known as the Great Compromiser, having thought of the Missouri Compromise and the Compromise of 1850. In the Election of 1824, Clay was part of the "corrupt bargain". He did this by withdrawing from the election so that John Quincy Adams would win and then appoint him as Secretary of State--a stepping stone onto presidency. He was despised by Andrew Jackson, who could have won the election. Clay is also known as the great creator of the American System. |
